The building is an interesting example of the gothic style architecture and has a beautiful water porch characterised by double lancet windows. It was commissioned by the Priuli Family in the 13th Century while the more recent modifications were made by the Dandolo Family. It is one of the best examples of medieval Venetian architecture.

It was the residence of illustrious Doges, the first of whom was Girolamo Dandolo (1280-1289) followed by Francesco Dandolo, 52nd Doge in 1329, and finishing with Lorenzo Priuli, 82nd Doge of Venice from 1556 to 1559 and Girolamo Priuli 83rd Doge of Venice from 1559 to 1569.
